It was still dark on July 31st, at 10.00 PM in Purwokerto, but 90 people gathered at Indesso Sokaraja office with happy faces, ready for an overnight bus ride to Jakarta airport. They showed no fatigue expression though many of them had just finished the night shift loading products to containers for export shipments. The images of joyful people in 2 buses were shared between Indessonian (a term for people who work at Indesso) in chatting group. Meanwhile, the same situation happened in Indesso Cileungsi plant. It was around 2.30 AM on August 1st, but the parking lot of Cileungsi plant looked like a busy bus terminal full of people. Seven buses were on standby for transferring hundreds of Indessonian to Jakarta airport. Indesso were bringing 505 employees on 3 days vacation to Genting Dream Cruise that day.
The company coined the term Celebouteam to describing the whole idea behind the trip, which was actually a celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary, a corporate outing, and a team building event. Sailing from Marina Bay Cruise Center (MBCC), Singapore, all Indesso’s employees from every operation area enjoyed togetherness in one place for the first time. Indesso also arranged a city tour for the employees, visiting several iconic places such as the Merlion statue and Bugis Street. This event was memorable because it was the first going abroad experience of many Indesso’s employees.
We are in The Same Boat
“Indesso started out its business with less than 30 employees. But along the way we expanded our business, built new manufacturing plants, and opened up office branches. We grew in number and corporate outing had been done separately per area ever since. But this year is a special year for Indesso and I want all employees celebrating this special event together,” said Robby Gunawan, the President Director of Indesso.
Being in the same boat for 3 days was also kind of a metaphorical expression that symbolized the company’s esprit de corps value, that no matter how big the company has become, all employees were in the same position, sharing a single vision. Indesso would never become this big today without the hard work of all departments. As a proverb said, “None of us is as good as all of us.”
Indesso booked Zouk Beach Club Open Deck and Zodiac Theatre Hall during the cruise trip for the company’s main celebration event. Dressing up in retro style, the employees enjoyed the first night singing, dancing, and playing fun games in the Zouk Beach Club. A formal celebration event was held on the second day in a talk show format, inviting some key figures for each decade of Indesso’s journey.
A video showed the old memory of Indesso’s founder, the late Robertus (Bob) Hartanto Gunawan during the 40th anniversary of Indesso. This was a precious experience for most of the audiences, for being able to hear and see a motion picture of their founder for the first time. Representing the first decade, the MC invited the other two Gunawan brothers, Sutanto Gunawan and Wien Gunawan to flashback to the early moments of Indesso. Sutanto was the one who designed the corporate logo, manually hand-drawn it. The logo withstood for 50 years, accompanying the ups and downs of the company.
